Why is the commitment to 100% locally-grown so important?
We feel that that in order to grow a truly resilient food system that is accessible to all, we must invest our dollar and SNAP power into our local farms. Our local farms need our help to keep going and to keep growing, to stay strong despite competition by imported foods that are highly subsidized and of increasingly questionable quality.
Locally grown food makes much more sense.
- Fresher. Imported produce average transport time is 5-10 days, if not more.
- Rebuilding. Our dollars are circulated back into our local economy (every $1 given to a local farmer changes hands within our community at least 3 times before returning back into the national system). That means each of your SNAP dollars benefits you and 3 neighbors before cycling back out.
- Economical. Food grown locally will remain much more stable in both price and supply in our era of climate change (think California drought and floods in Midwest) and rising energy (shipping) costs.

Find Farmers' Markets
Hawaii Food Map - MARKETS, a project of She grows food, is a growing listing of farmers markets operating in the state of Hawaii that are committed to the locally grown philosophy by insuring that 100% of the fruit, vegetables, herbs, spices and nuts are grown right here in Hawaii. It is our way of helping you to know where to get the freshest food possible and to direct your food dollars into building our local food system and a stronger local economy.
