The Urban Institute: The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) removed 8.4 million people from poverty in 2015

An Urban Institute report dated February, 2018 reports that "SNAP removed 8.4 million people from poverty in 2015, reducing the poverty rate from 15.4 percent to 12.8 percent (a 17 percent drop).1 This effect is particularly pronounced among children: SNAP reduced the number of children in poverty by 3.8 million, or 28 percent."
